15th International Organum histriae Festival

Through the years-long efforts of its organizers, the International „Organum Histriae“ Festival revived valuable but „sleepy“ Istrian organs.
The main goals of the project’s host have stayed the same: to restore the organs to the throne of the queen of instruments and re-interpret them in the present.

The Festivals also carries across the message that Istria is a region with the largest number of exceptionally well-crafted organs from the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

The event retraces the ways of Istrian organs and each year it is held at several attractive locations inside beautiful sacral spaces.
Umag, Buje, Motovun and Pula are some of the most important locations of the festival.

Players of the \'organić\', \'organeto\', \'organ\' or simply - harmonica - traditionally meet in Gračišće at the annual gathering, whose founder was Renato Pernić, the renowned Istrian scholar of traditional music. Apart from numerous soloists, musicians are also accompanied by traditional instruments such as double bass, diatonic accordion and \'bombardina\'. Numerous young musicians and the school of harmonica in Gračišće prove that this event is much more than just preserving something that is forgotten and belongs to the past. To make this event as interesting and colorful as possible, various cultural clubs from Istria participate in the program with traditional Istrian dances and \'kanti\' (songs).

ITF GMP CUP

ITF GMP CUP Umag, a big open championship for veterans, will be held in the westernmost Croatian town from 21st till 27th May.

This is an elite tournament of the so called grade 1, gathering 380 male and female players from 24 countries. The contests will be organized in several age-categories and the brilliant moves of tennis veterans will fire up the attractive courts of the tourist town of Umag.

With the return of GMP CUP to Umag, Northwestern Istria has received another significant recognition as a center of sport tourism and the host-town reaffirmed itself as one of the top tennis spectacle destinations.

This ambitious project is a photographic event where recognitions will be awarded to the authors of the best photographs created in the course of 2011. The intention of the event organizers is to make Photodays an annual meeting of photographers from Croatia and from abroad, aimed at the exchange of experience and knowledge. Their works will be evaluated by a jury of experts consisting of nine members, top-class experts from the sphere of photography, museum curators, gallery owners etc.

The final part of the competition - the gathering of the best photographers and of all fans of photography at the mega spectacle in Rovinj - will be held from 6th to 8th June. There, in addition to technical seminars, workshops, multimedia presentations by the nominated authors and photographs, photographic spectacles and the presence of interesting guests and participants, the official award ceremony will also be held.

Over the course of these three days Rovinj will probably be the most photographed town in the world. Professional photographers will pleased by participating in the work of workshops and receiving acknowledgements. You, on the other hand, can have fun at photo spectacles, fashion events, sailing, motor sports, and other sports. Do not forget your camera. Who knows, maybe your image of Rovinj will deserve to be included amongst the works of the top professionals, if not you can always keep it as a splendid memento of the event.

The gastronomic manifestation celebrating scallops as well as other shellfish and seafood, promoting Novigrad as an important gastronomic destination with specific gastronomic specialties.
The Novigrad scallop which, according to many, is the best in the world, definitely belongs to this group. The programme will take place in the town harbour, the so called Mandrač, and the offer of dishes with scallop and other shellfish at symbolic prices will be spread over a several dozen meters long table along Mandrač. The offer will include the specialties made by numerous Novigrad\'s restaurants and taverns, winemakers, olive growers, souvenir manufacturers..., within the programme there will be show-cooking of several dishes from scallops. The manifestation will of course include an appropriate music and animation programme, with traditional music, funny games, children\'s corner with animation, etc.
During \'\'the scallop weekend\'\' caterers will provide a special offer of dishes/menu based on this shellfish. By this gourmet manifestation Novigrad marks the beginning of the tourist season.

11th Days of Antiquity in Pula - Pula Superiorum

Pula once again organizes the Days of Antiquity for all its visitors and citizens.
The programs at Portarata and Giardini will also take us back to the Roman times, whereas the venue for ancient sports and gladiator fights will be the magnificent Arena.

We invite you to taste and enjoy the ancient drink mulsum, costumed entertainment programs and relaxed atmosphere, because during the Days of Antiquity Pula will turn into a true ancient stage!

General overview of the program:

The whole program of this year\'s Days of Antiquity will be held, similar like last last year, at the three most important ancient sites in the town of Pula The town square Forum, the Portarata (or Golden Arch) and the Arena. The event will last three days - Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7^th to the 9^th of June 2012. ).

The organizers have designed the following program for the festival:

1. Musical and drama performances - will be held at two locations – The Forum and Portarata during the three day festival. In addition to the performers from last year\'s Day of antiquity (Istrian National theatre, Go-Go Writersi, the ensemble Musigenae, and the association Raspadalica) will this year not only participate, but also complement their performances. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the drama group FERR as well as the Rondo Histrae choir  with performances and music, especially rehearsed for this event.
2. Children\'s ancient entertainment corner – moved by last year\'s excellent cooperation with the association Birikina, this year we decided that the association creates and coordinates the children\'s program. The Forum, will be the location where children will be able to participate through artistic expressions and stories, ancient sports and battleing it out with gladiators and legionaries. In addition, there will be a puppet show organized for the children, directed by Marina Štemberger and the Association of TOFA.
3. Battle of the Gladiators and Legionaries, as well as a costumed fights with lions - in this part of the festival visitors will enjoy two locations - Portarata during the festival, where we will be able to witness their trainnings and presentation, but then also in the Arena where they will present their fighting skills. Unlike, last year where we presented ancient football, the organizers this year, in cooperation with the acting association FERR, will present a costumed fight with lions.
4. Antique gastro program – delicious culinary delights, prepared using various ancient recipes can be enjoyed by the festival visitors at two locations – The Forum and Portarata. The antique cuisine will be prepared by professional chefs Ljudevit Sabo, Bojana Zenzerović and Roebrt Perić. Experience the ancient kitchen and reward all your senses with a rhapsody of ancient flavors and follow this with a glass of honey-wine, also known as Mulsum.  
5. Fashion show and presentation of ancient hairstyles - this part of the program will be held at two locations. The Forum will be a presentation of ancient hairstyles Hair Salon Goga, and the antique fashion show will be at the Portarata,  organized by Uros Raguž.
6. Cinematography and animated fil program – in coorporation with the Kino Valli from Pula, there will be various screenings of animated films of Asterix and Obelix and others. Admission is free.
7. Antique crafts and products fair - like last year, at the Forum there will be a tent set up for all those involved in developing old crafts and creative, and authentic artifacts, as well as degustations and preparations of delacacies such as wine, honey, olives and herbs...

Exhibitions and galleries program – and exhibition of photographs and works will be displayed inthe in the Tourist Office of Pula, the cinema Valli and the town library of Pula.

The Day of Hum - the smallest town in the world

According to legend Hum, the medieval town also known as the smallest town in the world, was founded completely by chance. Giants that were at the time building neighboring towns in the Mirna River valley decided to use the few remaining rocks and build a miniature town. This little town hasn\'t changed much over the centuries, and it seems as if even today the narrow stone-paved streets echo the tales of ancient knights. Each year on the Day of Hum all men from the parish elect their prefect in the municipal loggia according to the old tradition, by engraving votes on the wooden stick known as ‘raboš’. The town prefect is responsible for his parish, for settling disputes among residents and imposing penalties for disorderly conduct in Hum and the surrounding villages. And then to top it all, the election is followed by a folk festival where in the untouched, wonderful surrounding there is a chance to taste both the finest traditional dishes and well-known homemade wine and brandy. Hum is also the mecca of Croatian Glagolitism where you can see the first monuments and trace the very beginnings of Croatian literacy, as well as get to know the old Croatian alphabet ‘glagoljica’.

On June 15, the first Istrian professional golf course "Adriatic", situated in Savudrija, will be the meeting place of numerous golf players gathering at the third in a row UNICEF\'s humanitarian golf tournament, the proceeds of which will be used to improve the life of children in Croatia.

Once again the tournament will be hosted by the basketball legend and the most famous Croatian amateur golf player Toni Kukoč, one of the most successful sportsmen of all time, who every team will have an opportunity to play the 18th hole with.

The format of this golf tournament, scramble, is most frequently used at humanitarian tournaments. It is played in teams of 4 players, each team representing one donator. All players in the team play, resuming the game from the best stroke position, alternating until the hole is completed.

The Fažana Riviera was one of the first in the Mediterranean to make use of its beauties to promote nautical tourism. It was very often the case that two-masted coasters known as "TRABAKULI" sailed along the coast during summer months without cargo such as wood or wine and were in fact converted into "CRUISING SAILBOATS". There was time for fishing in the morning, swimming during the day and singing and dancing at night.

One of the first yacht clubs in Pula "YACHT GESCHWADER", founded by Austro- Hungarian naval officers greatly contributed to the popularization of sailing in this area.

Many regattas were held and so attracted the élite from entire Europe to our coast. In this way Pula, Brijuni and Fažana Channel became important destinations for yachtsmen and all sea lovers.

Jules Verne: Escape from the castle

In Jules Verne’s novel, in 1867 Mathias Sandorf was preparing a conspiracy for the secession of Hungary from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. But, he was discovered, and after a trial, was thrown in the Castle of Pazin to await execution. Sandorf and two other conspirators managed to escape from the castle by descending the cliff of the Cave of Pazin into its abyss. This adrenaline adventure is followed by a party, drinks and music from this historical time period.

The Valamar Jazz Festival, which is traditionally held in Poreč, begins on Wednesday, 20^th of June, at the Lapidarium of the Heritage Museum of Poreč with the performance of Croatian singer Marko Tolja.
In the atrium of the Euphrasian Basilica you can enjoy in the performance by guitarist Ralph Towner (USA).

From Friday 22nd to Sunday 24^th of June, the program will will continue at the main venue, the enchanting Island of Sv. Nikola just across the town\'s waterfront.
On the stage which is situated near the sea, top jazz musicians Enrico Rava (Italy), Joey Calderazzo (USA), Caecilie Norby (Denmark, Sweden), Hugh Masekela (South Africa) and Fred Wesley (USA) will peerform with their bands.

The Festival team has prepared a several extra events.

BaRoMus Festival

BaRoMus, a festival of Baroque music, brings to Rovinj leading musicians, soloists and ensembles that passionately explore the works of Baroque composers. This year, the town’s Baroque St. Francis Church will open its doors to the festival’s concerts of serious music. Located in De Amicis Street, the church and monastery were built in the early 18th century. This beautiful Baroque building houses a rich library and an interesting museum of sacred works of art, as a blend of tradition and modernity. The festival’s program also includes performers of the new generation who approach the Baroque in a different way. Through their musical expression, they provide a somewhat more contemporary view of the musical heritage of the bygone centuries. All concerts will be held in the Church of St. Francis, except the closing concert, to be held on St. Catherine’s Island. This distinctive festival is making Rovinj into the capital of Baroque music.

Jules Verne Days

It was the 26th of June 1867 when Mathias Sandorf, Stjepan Bathory and Ladislav Zathmar, three conspirators imprisoned in the tower of the Pazin fortress were awaiting the dawn for the execution of the punishment. They were sentenced to death by the Austrian court martial. But the night brought some voices: through the acoustic sailings of the antique Castle of Pazin, Sandorf heard the conversation of their traitors, and from the distinguished words the prisoners understood that they had been betrayed! A desire to escape and to take revenge crossed their mind so they broke the prison bars which divided them from the external world, got to the lightning conductor which leaded near their window to the depths, and started to descend the stone walls… Around them the storm was raging and the lightnings were illuminating from time to time the deep canyon of the Cave of Pazin... In remembrance of this literal episode from the novel \'Mathias Sandorf\', every year in Pazin at the end of June a large number of manifestations take place in a week dedicated to the French writer Jules Verne. This pioneer of the science-fiction literature genre gained inspiration for the plot and characters of his books also here, in our region, for example in Dubrovnik, Rovinj and Pazin. 

 The basis for his work \'Mathias Sandorf\' Jules Verne found in the book \'The Count of Monte Cristo\', while the inspiration for the writing came when he cruised the Mediterranean on his yacht \'Saint Michel\'. In his novel Verne mentions the travel writer and his acquaintance Charles Yriarte who described in his travel book with special attention and accuracy the architecture of the Castle of Pazin and the shapes of the Cave of Pazin as well as his experience of the awe-inspiring mysterious depth which he faced when he leaned out one window of the Castle of Pazin. In one of travel books he describes one event when the Count Esdorff, one of the officials of the port authorities of Pazin, entered the underground lake of the Cave of Pazin with a small boat because he wanted to find out where its end is. Yriarte on this occasion mentions the already well known belief that the waters of Pazinčica, in his text it was called Fojba, merge into the Bay of Lim, which is exactly the way taken by the heroes of the \'Mathias Sandorf\'. Jules Verne, which among other things was also very known for his detailed preparations, wanted to find out more about the setting of the story of his next book, so he sent a letter in 1883 to Giuseppe Cechi, the former mayor of Pazin, which answered him with accurate descriptions and photos of Pazin and the Cave of Pazin. Because of that, Leon Benett, the artist which illustrated more than one third of the Verne\'s novels, could draw very easily the Castle of Pazin and the cliff which ends as a huge hole. 

 The Jules Verne Club, founded in October 1997, made possible the connection between many literature and adventurism lovers, admirers of long distance traveling, sea depths, the infinity of the universe as well as inventions and discoveries which changed the world. Everyone who is interested in Jules Verne as a writer, a founder of the science-fiction literature genre and a visionary of the whole humanity progress, can become member of this club which was found in Pazin - in other words - in the istrian town remembered and described from Jules Verne in the novel \'Mathias Sandorf\'. Members of this club do not have to pay any fee, but every new member has the \'participation-obbligation\' to donate either a book, a film or a comic strip of this science-fiction writer.

BaRoMus, a festival of Baroque music, brings to Rovinj leading musicians, soloists and ensembles that passionately explore the works of Baroque composers. This year, the town’s Baroque St. Francis Church will open its doors to the festival’s concerts of serious music. Located in De Amicis Street, the church and monastery were built in the early 18th century. This beautiful Baroque building houses a rich library and an interesting museum of sacred works of art, as a blend of tradition and modernity. The festival’s program also includes performers of the new generation who approach the Baroque in a different way. Through their musical expression, they provide a somewhat more contemporary view of the musical heritage of the bygone centuries. All concerts will be held in the Church of St. Francis, except the closing concert, to be held on St. Catherine’s Island. Casanovafest, the love and erotic festival is being held on the 23st - 25th of June 2011 in Vrsar, one of the sources of inspiration for this unique manifestation, which even for Casanova, during his two visits in 1743. and 1744. remained in his memory as a place of fine drink, good food and beautiful women.
Casanovafest was invented by Slobodan Vugrinec and Boris T. Matić as a manifestation which celebrates historical connections between the famous lover Casanova and Vrsar.

Giacomo Casanova visited Vrsar two times, in 1743. and 1744. which was already famous for good drink (Refoška), food and beautiful women.
Casanovafest is inspired by the natural beauty of Vrsar and the archipelago and also the fact that Coversada, first and at that time the biggest naturist camp in Europe, was founded in 1961.
Love and erotica are inexaustible source of inspiration and because of that the festival will celebrate that eternal theme and ponderation on love and relationships with different artistic areas such as literature evenings, exibitions, lectures, gastronomical treats, movie projections and music events. Even Casanova himself pondered all theese issues which he experiences first-hand and so vividly described in his memoirs.

At the late June and the beginning of July, the streets and squares in Umag become the stage to the numerous theatre fleets from Croatia, Slovenia, Italia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia. In this period, the streets live their lives fully thanks to the Golden Lion, the international chamber theatre festival.

This multicultural event that gathers numerous writers, directors, choreographers, set designers, composers and of course, actors, chose Umag, a city of a long theatre tradition, as its home town. Namely, in 1820, while Antonio Coslovich was building the Al Leon d\'oro hotel, it was decided that he should also set the theatre next to the hotel, the first of its kind in the region.

The Golden Lion, envisaged as the modern theatre review with a set theme, became the real tourist attraction and a bait for all theatre and culture aficionados. 

The whole 10-day theatrical story begins with the traditional lighting up the fire in the park belonging to the town theatre, and the Umag theatre afterwards is lively all day long, up to the night.

During Parkfest, Novigrad becomes a meeting point of a diverse multitude of young people interested in different forms of creative activity, from music, photography and painting to performance and design.

Coming into existence in 2006 in the organization of youth association "Sidro" from Novigrad, over the years this several days long urban festival became the biggest music-artistic event for the young in north-western Istria.

The primary goal of the festival is to promote Istrian musicians and artists and attract visitors and promote Istria as a desirable tourist destination for the young through cooperation with individuals and groups from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy and United Kingdom. This year, the town’s Baroque St. Francis Church will open its doors to the festival’s concerts of serious music. Located in De Amicis Street, the church and monastery were built in the early 18th century. This beautiful Baroque building houses a rich library and an interesting museum of sacred works of art, as a blend of tradition and modernity. The festival’s program also includes performers of the new generation who approach the Baroque in a different way. Through their musical expression, they provide a somewhat more contemporary view of the musical heritage of the bygone centuries. All concerts will be held in the Church of St. Francis, except the closing concert, to be held on St. Catherine’s Island. The Poreč square \'Trg slobode\' becomes the central venue for the event. The ambiance and crowds completely blend with the performances of folklore groups. Especially interesting is the competition of solo players of Mediterranean wind instruments. For all lovers of Mediterranean cuisine there is a presentation of old traditional dishes that have been prepared with a lot of love. Held in Umag for more than 20 years, the Summer ATP Tournament is the climax of the tourist season in north-western Istria, and is one of the most important sports and social events in Croatia. 

The town is then host to world-ranking tennis players, while the cream of society, journalists and reporters, sports experts and tennis aficionados spend time in and around the luxurious tennis complex Stella Maris. 

The incontestable king of this tournament is Carlos Moya. Although he retired from professional tennis in late 2010, it will forever be recorded that of the 20 victories in his career, five were won in Umag, the town that made him an honorary citizen and that has many fond memories of him. 

Many others have also passed through the Umag ATP tournament on their way to tennis fame: Thomas Muster, Guillermo Canas, Marcelo Rios, Filippo Volandri, David Ferrer, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Nikolay Davydenko, Novak Đoković, Ivan Ljubičić, and others.

Entertainment, concerts, evening parties and, since recently, the Festival of Istrian Culinary Delicacies Istria Gourmetare part of the tournament festivities. 

Do we need to say that the finals are a top attraction and that tickets are always in steep demand? You will find high state officials, celebrities and trendsetters among the spectators, and the cup is presented to the winner by the President of the Republic. After the cup went to the Croatian tennis player Goran Prpić in the first ATP Tournament in 1990, we are still waiting for it to be won by another home player.

The month of July sees Labin transformed into a true “art republic”. The town’s Little Theatre, its church, old square, streets and stairs take on the roles of stages on which perform a variety of theatrical groups and musicians. It all begins with sound of jazz on the summer stage at Špina in the old town, announcing the Labin Jazz Republic, a festival hosting mEmento Rijeka, Tamara Obrovac and Matija Dedić, Dina Rizvić and guests.

Musical, theatrical and art performances will take place in outdoor and indoor venues throughout the old town, and the alluring sounds of harmony-singing groups (klapa), orchestras of classical music and folklore music, and jazz bands will resound through the streets of Labin. The art studios, galleries and collections of renowned painters will be open to visitors.

The history of Momjan reaches back to 1035 and the spirit of the long history is following you in the every lane of Momjan. Momjan is irresistible due to muscat of Momjan, the white grapevine variety which grows in the limited area of Momjan, at the altitude of 200 to 350 m. Many connoisseur  of Istrian wine will award the 1st place to the muscat of Momjan due to its golden colour, intensive wild carnations scent and the extraordinary aroma. Dry and sweet. It commonly accompanies the sweets, as well as every sophisticated dish. The muscat is also attributed with aphrodisiac properties,  specially with coy ladies.

Due to its specificity, the muscat of Momjan is also admired outside Istria. It won a gold medal at the Wine Exhibition in Brussels back in 1935. If its charm was truly enjoyed at the court of the emperor Franz Joseph in Vienna and the King Emanuel III in Rome, why wouldn\'t you do that...?

You can try the emperor\'s muscat from the Momjan area at the manifestation to its honour at a beautiful location near the mediaeval Momjan castle. While tasting the muscat of Momjan, where the wine is offered to the guests by the MUSCATeers dressed in MUSCATeer\'s uniforms, one may see a special programme with the historic presentation of Momjan and its surroundings.

White wine was drunk with honey, and rose petals were added to the red one. The life flourished in the rustic villas around the present-day Umag, and the standard of beauty and cuisine were different than today. That was between the 1st and the 4th c. AD, in the times when a part of the north-western part of Istrian coast near Umag was known under the name of Sepomaia.

The people of Umag will hold the festival to honour those times from July 30 till August 01 at the old St Martin’s city square, next to the city museum, and, for three days, revive the spirit of the antiquity, which left a permanent civilisation mark in these areas. 

There will be food from the Roman times, prepared according to the recipes of the famous Apicius cookbook. There will be a performance of the antique dancers and gladiators, and the overview of the ancient times will be supplemented by the old trades’ workshops – pottery, stone-masonry and mosaic-making. The typical dishes will be offered by the tavern Kod Radovana i Vjeke.

On the same occasion, the Umag City Museum will present its own exhibition of pottery, found during the excavations at the important antique locality of Katoro at the similar cape near Umag.

CLASSIC CAR SHOW 2012

Given that Buzet is a place where people are fans of motorsports and a place where one of the races of European hillclimb championship is held, the local community of Old town Buzet has decided to held a show of old classic cars called BUZET CLASSIC CAR 2012.

Old classic cars from the previous century will be on display on the squares in the Old town Buzet. Each square will represent a different time period and the music played will belong to that particular time period. Besides the car show, there will be other events like a truffle cooking show and a rich gastro offer. Buzet Tourist Office will have its own tourist information centre where visitors will be able to get acquainted with the upcoming events like the Subotina in the old-fashioned way and the Weekend of truffles.

Jules Verne: Escape from the castle

In Jules Verne’s novel, in 1867 Mathias Sandorf was preparing a conspiracy for the secession of Hungary from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. But, he was discovered, and after a trial, was thrown in the Castle of Pazin to await execution. Sandorf and two other conspirators managed to escape from the castle by descending the cliff of the Cave of Pazin into its abyss. This adrenaline adventure is followed by a party, drinks and music from this historical time period.

Nature park and excursion site Dubrova at the entrance to the town Labin is well known for its international sculptors\' symposium, which year after year enriches the existing impressive collection of Istrian stone sculptures. Stone, as one of the most durable materials and an ever-present element of the Mediterranean sculptors\' symposium has also become one of the symbols of the Labin area. Until today nearly a hundred symposium participants have sculptured stone in this nature park; famous sculptors from all over the world who during the summer months work in Dubrova as guest artists leaving behind tangible results of their creative ideas. Presently, there are about 90 such works, and \'Amphitheater valley\', work of the academic sculptor Josip Diminić has been completed, representing a venue for performances and concerts, plays and painting auctions...
